Can You Do MCA Without Maths? MCA After BCom, BA, BSc and BCA

“Without maths” can mean no Mathematics in your degree, or none since school — and each MCA entrance treats those differently. Read what the official rules actually say, find the routes open to your background, and see how much Mathematics you will still need to prepare.

Short answer

Often yes — but it depends on which maths

Many B.Com., B.A., B.Sc. and BCA students ask whether MCA is closed to them because Mathematics was never their subject. The honest answer is that there is no single MCA rule: each entrance exam — and in some cases each university — sets its own, and they look at Mathematics at different levels.

Which maths?

“Without maths” can mean two different things

Before you read any eligibility rule, be clear about which of these describes you. The exams don't ask the same question.

  1. Mathematics at 10+2 level — you studied Mathematics in 12th, but your degree (B.Com., B.A., a non-maths B.Sc.) has no Mathematics or Statistics subject.
  2. Mathematics at graduation level — Mathematics or Statistics appears as a subject in your degree, whatever the degree is called.

Most “without maths” questions are really the first case: Mathematics in school, none in the degree. A smaller group has no Mathematics after 10th at all. The exams treat each of these backgrounds differently — and that decides which exams you can take.

Your route

Find your row: the routes open to you

Pick the background that matches your marksheets. Every cell is NSG's plain reading of the official rule above — the minimum marks still apply in each case.

  • Mathematics or Statistics in your degree

    NIMCET
Meets the subject rule — a three-year degree with Mathematics / Statistics as one of the subjects.1
    MAH MCA CET
Can appear — any graduation degree qualifies.2
    CUET PG MCA
Set by each university — check its MCA eligibility before you apply4
  • Mathematics in 12th, not in your degree

    NIMCET
Not eligible — Mathematics or Statistics must be a subject of the degree itself (unless it is a B.E. / B.Tech.).1
    MAH MCA CET
Can appear — the brochure names Mathematics at 10+2 level as one option.2
    CUET PG MCA
Set by each university — check its MCA eligibility before you apply4
  • No Mathematics in 12th or in your degree

    NIMCET
Not eligible — the degree needs Mathematics / Statistics as a subject.1
    MAH MCA CET
Can appear with any graduation degree; Mathematics is “preferred” — confirm admission eligibility in that year's CAP brochure.2
    CUET PG MCA
Set by each university — check its MCA eligibility before you apply4
  • B.E. / B.Tech.

    NIMCET
    Accepted as a qualifying degree.1
    MAH MCA CET
Can appear — listed among the brochure's examples.2
    CUET PG MCA
Set by each university — check its MCA eligibility before you apply4

In practice, if Mathematics stopped in school, MAH MCA CET is the clearest route to an MCA seat, and CUET PG MCA is worth checking university by university. NIMCET opens only when Mathematics or Statistics is part of your degree.

By degree

MCA after B.Com., B.A., B.Sc. or BCA

The same rules, read for the degrees students ask about most. Your own marksheets decide which row applies to you.

  • After B.Com.

B.Com. is named in the MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure among the degrees that can appear. NIMCET depends on whether Mathematics or Statistics is a subject of your B.Com.

    How to approach it

    • Look for Mathematics or Statistics among the subjects on your marksheets.
    • If a paper's title differs and you're unsure it counts, ask the exam authority before applying.
    • Check that your aggregate meets each exam's minimum marks.

Watch out: assuming every B.Com. is the same — subjects differ between universities.

  • After B.A.

B.A. falls under “any graduation degree” for MAH MCA CET. For NIMCET, only a B.A. with Mathematics or Statistics as a subject meets the rule.

    How to approach it

    • Check whether Mathematics or Statistics was one of your degree subjects.
    • Note whether you studied Mathematics in 12th — it is the other level the MAH brochure names.
    • Confirm admission eligibility in the CAP brochure of the year you apply.

Watch out: ruling MCA out without reading the MAH MCA CET brochure.

  • After B.Sc.

A B.Sc. with Mathematics or Statistics meets the NIMCET subject rule. A B.Sc. without either — biology or chemistry streams, for example — is in the same position as other non-maths degrees.

    How to approach it

    • Check your degree subjects, not just the B.Sc. title.
    • With Mathematics or Statistics in the degree, keep all three exams on your list.
    • Without them, start with MAH MCA CET and the CUET (PG) universities' own rules.

Watch out: treating every B.Sc. as a maths degree.

  • After BCA

BCA is named in the MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure. For NIMCET, what counts is whether Mathematics or Statistics is listed as a subject of your BCA.

    How to approach it

    • Read your BCA marksheets for Mathematics or Statistics subjects.
    • If you're unsure whether a paper counts, ask the exam authority before applying.
    • Your computer background helps in Computer Concepts — but the Mathematics section still needs its own preparation.

Watch out: assuming BCA automatically satisfies a Mathematics rule.

The maths you'll need

Eligible without maths is not an exam without maths

Whichever route you take, the entrance test itself includes Mathematics. Plan for it from the start.

The rules decide whether you can sit the exam. Your preparation decides what you do with the chance.

Where to start

If maths isn't your strength: where to start

Students from commerce and arts backgrounds do prepare for MCA entrances. What helps is starting early and rebuilding the basics in order.

  1. Find your gaps first

Go through the official Mathematics topic list and mark each area as comfortable, rusty or new.

    • You know which topics need the most time.
  2. Rebuild the basics

Start with arithmetic and algebra — most other topics lean on them — before moving to geometry, trigonometry and statistics.

    • You can solve standard 12th-level questions without notes.
  3. Practise a little every day

Short daily sessions work better than long weekend ones when you are returning to Mathematics after a gap.

    • Mathematics appears in every week of your plan.
  4. Move to timed exam questions

Once the basics hold, practise entrance-level questions against the clock, alongside the other sections.

    • Your accuracy holds when you are timed.

Verify first

Before you apply: check the official rules

Confirm these for the year you apply

  • NIMCET: the qualifying-degree rule and minimum marks in the current information brochure — the 2027 brochure is not published yet.
  • MAH MCA CET: who can appear in the current CET brochure, and admission eligibility in that year's CAP information brochure.
  • CUET PG MCA: the MCA eligibility of every university you want, in NTA's participating-universities list and the university's own admission notice.
  • Your marksheets: which subjects your degree actually lists, and your aggregate.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Mathematics compulsory for MCA?

It depends on the route. NIMCET 2026 required Mathematics or Statistics as a subject of the degree (or a B.E. / B.Tech.). The MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure accepted any graduation degree, “preferably” with Mathematics at 10+2 or graduation level. CUET PG MCA eligibility is set by each university.

Can I do MCA after B.Com.?

B.Com. is among the degrees named in the MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure, with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved-category, EWS and PwD candidates belonging to Maharashtra). NIMCET is open only if Mathematics or Statistics is a subject of your B.Com. For CUET (PG), check each university's MCA eligibility.

Can I do MCA after B.A.?

The MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure accepted any graduation degree, so a B.A. graduate could appear. NIMCET needs Mathematics or Statistics as a subject of the degree. Admission in Maharashtra follows the CAP brochure of the admission year — confirm there.

Is Mathematics in 12th enough for MCA?

Not for NIMCET, which looks at the degree. The MAH MCA CET 2026 brochure names Mathematics at 10+2 level as one of its two options. For CUET (PG), it depends on the university's rule.

Does BCA count as a maths background for NIMCET?

Only if Mathematics or Statistics is listed as a subject of your BCA. Check your marksheets; if you are unsure whether a paper counts, ask the exam authority through the contact details in the NIMCET brochure before applying.

How much Mathematics is there in MAH MCA CET?

In 2026, Mathematics & Statistics was 30 questions and 60 of the 200 marks, on high-school mathematics up to the 12th standard. The paper had no negative marking. Check the current brochure for any change.

Can NSG Academy help if Mathematics is not my strength?

Yes. Book a free counselling session: an NSG counsellor will look at your degree subjects and your comfort with Mathematics, help you choose the right exam, and suggest how to prepare — in Pune or online.
